Bangalore's registered surrogacy clinics cover most parts of the city. Jayanagar has three entries, and JP Nagar, Kanakapura Road and Basaveshwaranagar add more in the south and west. Koramangala, HSR Layout, Bellandur and Electronic City cover the south-east, while Yelahanka, Sahakaranagar, RT Nagar and Kammanahalli sit in the north.

One feature stands out: a single hospital group holds seven of the sixteen entries. Every one of its branches that offers surrogacy needs its own registration, so each appears as its own row. All Bangalore numbers follow the same long pattern, ending with Bengaluru Urban and a serial. That makes them easy to match once you know where to look.

One group, seven registrations: what that means for you

A brand name on a signboard does not tell you whether that building is registered for surrogacy. The registration belongs to a specific branch. If you consult at one location and are referred to another for a procedure, both should appear on the registry list.

Ask a simple question at the start: which branch will do the IVF, and which will look after the surrogate during pregnancy? Then check that each branch named has its own number in the table above.

Branch registrations also help you compare like with like. Two branches of one group may differ in which doctors work there and which steps they handle. Treat each as its own clinic when you collect estimates.

The same rule applies to smaller clinics. A clinic with ART registration alone cannot run surrogacy, since a separate surrogacy registration is required.

Checking a Karnataka number in three steps

1. Ask for the certificateAny registered surrogacy clinic can show its certificate. Note the full number, including the year and the serial at the end.
2. Open the registry listSearch the national list for Karnataka or Bengaluru Urban, and find the same number.
3. Match the addressConfirm that the locality on the registry matches the branch you are visiting, such as Kodihalli or Electronic City.

If any detail does not match, ask the clinic to explain before you pay anything.

Remember that ART registration also has a life span. Under the ART Act, it must be renewed every five years. A clinic that registered in 2022 should keep its certificate current, so look at the validity dates as well as the number.

Questions that suit a working couple

Surrogacy runs over many months, and much of it happens while both of you are at work. These questions help you judge how a clinic will fit around your schedule.

• Can reports be shared and discussed online, or does every review need a visit?
• Which steps need both partners present, and which need only one?
• Will one doctor plan the case, or will we see different doctors at different branches?
• Is the estimate itemised and in writing, with exclusions listed?
• How many embryo transfer attempts does the figure cover, out of the three allowed?
